Our Approach

If you've been in the dog training field for long, you've probably noticed that there's a lot of discussion regarding training techniques. Many handlers are committed to a single system or a single trainer and unwilling to admit that what works for them and their dog may not work for another dog/handler team. We strive to be open to learning the opinions and methods of others, and openly acknowledge that any single system or method is not going to be the best pick for every team.

A recent quote from a Canine Training Academy newsletter nicely sums up what we're trying to say:

"When we keep our minds open to learning new things, the opportunities to better ourselves in this profession are endless. When we refuse to learn something new, feel threatened by concepts that differ from our own, dismiss people with new ideas, hoard information instead of sharing it or refuse to be tolerant of people struggling to learn, we cheat ourselves and others out of opportunities to grow and become more proficient and we risk becoming ignorant, unethical or obsolete and that’s no way to pay it forward."

On the membership page you may have noticed that we require new members to attend 10 practices without their dog. During these 10 practices, the new member will be exposed to various disciplines (airscent, trailing, and HRD), training techniques, and dog working styles. Our goal in this policy is to encourage handlers to learn about different training methods and systems before they start training and commit to a single one.
